For over 130 years, the Millicent Library has stood as Fairhaven’s symbol of learning, imagination, and heritage. It is more than just a repository of books. It is a place where families find sanctuary within the library's walls, with infants and children delighting in enchanting story times. Nestled within the library's walls lies a treasure trove of local history, with archival collections preserving the history of Fairhaven through photographs, maps, and memorabilia. It is a place where generations gather to explore and dream.
To preserve this historic landmark for future generations, the Millicent Library seeks to raise $2 million to create a safe, comfortable, and climate-controlled environment that protects the library’s priceless collections and welcomes all who come to learn, imagine, and connect.
About the Millicent Library
The Millicent Library is a 503(c) nonprofit corporation and has a unique relationship with the Town of Fairhaven. The corporation is a separate entity, operating with a Board of Trustees, and a director and staff providing free library services to residents of Fairhaven and the surrounding area as part of the SAILS library network. The director and staff are employees of the Millicent Library Corporation, not the Town of Fairhaven.
The Millicent Library building was given to the Town of Fairhaven by Henry Huttleston Rogers, in memory of his daughter, Millicent who had passed away at the age of 17. The Millicent Library Corporation was established by Rogers and is responsible for maintaining and preserving the historic building.
Lack of Climate Control
Due to the historic nature of the building, the Millicent Library does not currently have air conditioning. High heat and humidity have become an ongoing problem throughout the hotter and more humid months of the year. In 2022, the library was closed 7 days, in 2023 the library was closed 3 days, in 2024 the library closed for 5 days, and in 2025 the library was closed for 7 days due to the intolerable and, in some instances, unsafe conditions for staff and patrons. These conditions are also detrimental to the library’s resources and invaluable archives.
The library uses a climate monitoring subscription service, which records the library’s interior climate conditions. In 2025, the highest temperature recorded was 86.5 degrees Fahrenheit and the highest humidity was 83.2%.
Such conditions create extremely uncomfortable and unsafe work environment for staff and library patrons per OSHA’s guidelines. High heat and humidity also damage library materials.
Progress
Beginning in 2022, the Millicent Library Trustees began looking at the feasibility of adding a central air conditioning system to the library to support staff and patrons, and to ensure the integrity of all library resources. The trustees have funded several key projects to achieve this goal including an HVAC and electrical existing conditions report, electric panel study, electrical upgrade design construction documents, asbestos studies and abatements, and contributed to the funding of the electrical upgrade. Total costs contributed by the Millicent Library Trustees exceeds $100,000.
The Town of Fairhaven’s Community Preservation Committee generously funded a large portion of the costs of the electrical upgrade and is funding the current schematic design phase of the HVAC upgrade. The schematic design will guide the next phase of detailed engineering and construction planning.
